What is gout?
Gout is caused by a build up of Uric Acid which crystallises in the joints, effective a form of arthritis. As the result a joint (or joints) become inflamed and painful. Visual indicators are of the affected joint becoming hot, red and swollen.
Gout may only appear in one joint at a time (commonly the big toe) but it can and does impact other parts of the foot as well as hands, wrists, elbows and knees.
Flares may be sudden, lasting from a few days extending to episodes over a number of weeks. Discomfort is often extremely painful with a tendency to reoccur Failure to address the cause may result in the condition becoming chronic.
Who gets gout?
Men are more likely to experience pain from gout than women, the likelihood increasing with age. Other issues which can contribute towards the onset of gout include lifestyle, and diet with some ethnic groups appearing to be more susceptible.
Other factors which can increase the likelihood of gout are:
- hereditary, genetics
- alcohol consumption
- post menopausal women
- certain medications may increase risk such as diuretics (water tablets) or medicines for high blood pressure (i.e. ACE inhibitors)
- certain medical conditions; high cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney problems, osteoarthritis or diabetes
- surgery (or if you’ve experienced an injury).
How common is gout?
A recent study found that as many as 1 in 40 suffer gout at some level in the UK. Men over 30 are most likely to be susceptible, as well as post menopausal women.
Managing Gout
While there are various prescription medications available to combat gout they often come with unwelcome side effects. Our view is that is best to confront the condition naturally. Avoiding foods which are high in purines, sugar, certain seafood and meat, alcohol will help alongside regular exercise and weight management.
